Introduction Pre-eclampsia (PE) is defined as a pregnancy-specific syndrome. It occurs after mid-gestation with a de novo appearance of hypertension and proteinuria. The hypertension is defined as equal to or above 140/90 mm Hg, and the proteinuria is greater than or equal to 300 mg in 24 hours. Oedema was previously included in the PE definition, but has now been excluded on the basis that it is seen in many normotensive pregnant women (5).
